Privacy Policy — WeatherDrobe

Last updated: 22 September 2026

WeatherDrobe ("the app", "we", "us") is a weather-and-wardrobe app that shows an outfit suited to today's weather. This policy explains what data the app handles and why.

It covers both versions of the app — the Android version distributed through Google Play, and the iPhone and iPad version distributed through the Apple App Store. The two are built from the same code and handle your data the same way, with two exceptions this policy states plainly wherever they matter: the free Android version shows ads and the iPhone and iPad version does not, and each version is paid for through its own store. Where a permission or a setting has a different name on each platform, both names are given.

WeatherDrobe is a fully on-device app: we operate no servers, user accounts, or profiles, and we do not track you.

Summary

Information We Process

Location

To show local weather, the app may request your device location (precise or approximate). If you grant permission, your latitude and longitude are sent over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection to our weather provider (see below) solely to retrieve a forecast for that point. You can instead search for a city by name; that search text is sent to a geocoding service to resolve coordinates. Location data is used only for app functionality. It is never used for advertising or tracking, and we do not store it on any server of ours — we have none.

This is the same on both platforms. On Android the permission is ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION / ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION; on iPhone and iPad it is "While Using the App" location access. Neither version asks for background or "always" location.

Photos

The app lets you pick or capture images for your wardrobe. These images are stored locally on your device only. They are never transmitted off the device, uploaded, or shared. If you choose "Save Image" from the share sheet, the image is written to your own photo library on your device and nowhere else.

Steps

If you allow it, the app reads your phone's step counter to show how much you walk each day — the step sensor ("Physical activity") on Android, Motion & Fitness on iPhone. Your daily and hourly step counts, and the floors climbed on phones that measure them, are stored locally on your device. WeatherDrobe never transmits, uploads or shares them, and does not read or write Apple Health or Google Health Connect. Step counting is optional: the app asks before it reads anything, and you can turn it off at any time in Settings.

On Android, steps are counted only while the app is open, unless you turn on "Keep counting when the app is closed". That optional setting runs a background service, which Android requires to show a permanent notification while it runs. It reads the same sensor into the same on-device record and sends nothing anywhere. It is off unless you turn it on. On iPhone, the phone's motion coprocessor counts steps whether or not the app is open, so no background service is involved; the app reads the counts from the system when you open it, and the steps widget reads today's count on your device.

The steps page also lets you enter your height and your weight, so that the distance and calorie figures it shows are estimated for you rather than for a generic adult. Both are entirely optional — nothing asks for them, and the estimates work without them. They need no permission, they are used for nothing but those two estimates, they are stored on your device, and WeatherDrobe never sends them to us or to anyone else. You can erase them at any time with the Clear button in that sheet, which removes them from the device immediately.

App Settings

Preferences (units, theme, character choice, notification choices, selected location, step goal) are saved locally on your device using standard on-device storage — SharedPreferences on Android, UserDefaults on iPhone and iPad. They are not sent anywhere.

Home Screen Widgets and Background Refresh

Both the Android and the iOS version offer home screen widgets. To keep a widget current, the app may refresh the forecast in the background — through Android's WorkManager or iOS's background app refresh — which sends the same location to the same weather provider described above, and nothing else. The result, and today's step count for the widget that shows it, is written to storage shared between the app and its widget on your device (a shared preferences file on Android, an App Group container on iPhone and iPad). Remove the widget, or turn off background refresh in your system settings, and these refreshes stop.

Notifications

If you enable reminders, and when a steps trophy is ready to claim, notifications are scheduled and shown locally on your device. There is no push server: no notification data leaves your device, on either platform. Android 13 and later ask for the POST_NOTIFICATIONS permission; iPhone and iPad ask through the standard system notification prompt.

Crash Diagnostics

If the app crashes or hits an unexpected error, a diagnostic report may be sent to our error-monitoring provider (Sentry) so the fault can be fixed. A report contains the error, a stack trace, and basic device information such as the operating system version and device model. It does not contain your name, email, account identifier, advertising ID, photos, step counts, or your coordinates — latitude and longitude are stripped from any address recorded in a report before it is sent. These reports are used only to diagnose faults, never for advertising, profiling, or analytics. This applies identically to the Android and iOS versions.

Advertising

The iPhone and iPad version shows no ads. No advertising SDK is initialised in it, no ad is ever requested, and nothing in it reads Apple's advertising identifier (IDFA). There is no ad-consent form and no App Tracking Transparency prompt, because there is nothing to consent to. If that ever changes, this policy will be updated to describe it before the change ships.

The free Android version is supported by ads served by Google AdMob: a banner at the bottom of the main and forecast screens, and at most one full-screen ad every four hours, shown when you open the full forecast. Ads never appear while the app is starting up or interrupt you mid-task.

To select an ad, Google receives your device's advertising ID, your IP address, and an approximate location Google derives from that IP address. We do not pass your GPS coordinates to Google, and the app has no code that could — the exact location you grant for weather is used only to fetch your forecast. Google may use what it receives for ad targeting, frequency capping, and measurement under its own privacy policy.

Your choices on Android. If you are in the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland, you are shown a consent form before any ad is requested, and nothing is requested until you answer. You can reopen that form at any time from Settings → Ads → Ad privacy choices and change your decision. If you decline, no ads are served at all. Anywhere, you can reset or delete your advertising ID in your device settings (Settings → Google → Ads).

Buying Premium on Android removes ads entirely, and with them everything described in the last three paragraphs. That is a genuine difference in what leaves your device, not only a difference in what you see.

Purchases

WeatherDrobe Premium is optional. If you buy it, the payment itself is handled entirely by the store: the App Store on iPhone and iPad, Google Play on Android. Your payment details are entered in Apple's or Google's own checkout sheet and never pass through this app. To know whether Premium is active, the purchase record is sent over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection to our billing provider (RevenueCat), which stores it so your purchase can be restored if you reinstall or change device.

This does not create an account. Your purchase is linked to an anonymous identifier generated on your device, not to a name, email address, or login. We never receive or store your card number, bank details, or billing address. If you never buy Premium, nothing is sent to RevenueCat at all.

Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled. You can cancel at any time — on iPhone and iPad in Settings → Apple Account → Subscriptions, and on Android in Google Play under Payments & subscriptions. Cancelling is handled by Apple or Google, not by us, and deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

Third-Party Services

The app sends requests to the following providers. We share only what each one needs to answer. The list is the same on both platforms except where a provider is marked as one platform only:

Refer to their policies for how they handle request data.

Data Sharing and Sale

We do not sell your data. We share it only with the providers listed above, and only the minimum each needs.

One of those relationships is different from the rest and we would rather say so than bury it: Open-Meteo, Sentry and RevenueCat each act on our behalf, processing what we send in order to answer us. Google AdMob, used by the free Android version only, does not. It uses what it receives — your advertising ID and an approximate location — for its own ad targeting and measurement. If that is not a trade you want to make, Premium removes ads and everything that goes with them. Nothing on iPhone or iPad is shared for advertising.

Data Security

All network requests use encrypted HTTPS connections. We run no servers of our own, and WeatherDrobe never sends your settings, photos, wardrobe, step counts or the height and weight you may have entered anywhere at all. What is held off your device is limited to two things: a purchase receipt at our billing provider, if you bought Premium, containing no name, email or payment details; and, on the free Android version only, the advertising data Google receives to serve ads. Neither includes anything you typed or photographed in the app.

One copy can exist off the phone without us: if your phone's own backup is switched on — Android backup to your Google account, or iCloud Backup on iPhone and iPad — the system may include this app's data in a backup that only you and Google or Apple can reach. That is the operating system's feature, not ours, and you control it in your device settings.

Data Retention and Deletion

All app data — settings, photos, step counts, any height and weight you entered, and your wardrobe — lives on your device. To delete it, uninstall the app (Android or iPhone and iPad alike); we hold no copy, because we store nothing on our side. If your phone's backup is switched on, a copy may also sit in your own Google or iCloud account, and that account's controls remove it. Your height and weight can also be deleted on their own, without uninstalling: open the steps page, open the height-and-weight sheet, and tap Clear.

If you bought Premium, the purchase receipt held by our billing provider is the one exception. It is what makes your purchase restorable, so it outlives an uninstall by design. To have it erased, email us at the address below and we will request its deletion — note that doing so gives up the ability to restore the purchase. Payment records held by Apple or Google Play are governed by their own policies and retention rules.

Children's Privacy

WeatherDrobe is intended for general audiences and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Permissions We Request

Both versions ask for the same things, except where a row says otherwise; only the names differ.

What it is forAndroidiPhone and iPad
Weather for where you are ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION, ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION Location — While Using the App
Adding wardrobe images (optional, stored locally) Photo picker / camera Camera, Photo Library
Counting your steps (optional, stored locally) ACTIVITY_RECOGNITION (Physical activity) Motion & Fitness
Counting steps with the app closed (optional, off by default) FOREGROUND_SERVICE, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_HEALTH Not needed — the iPhone counts steps on its own
Reminders, and trophy notifications POST_NOTIFICATIONS Notifications
Requesting forecasts INTERNET Granted by default
Restoring reminders, widgets and background step counting after a restart RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED Not applicable

You can withdraw any of these at any time — on Android in Settings → Apps → WeatherDrobe → Permissions, and on iPhone and iPad in Settings → WeatherDrobe. The app keeps working without them; you can search a city by name instead of granting location.

Your Rights

Because we hold no personal data on any server of ours, there is nothing for us to look up, export, or correct about you. Deleting the app deletes everything it stored. The single exception is the purchase receipt described under Data Retention and Deletion, which we will ask our billing provider to erase on request. If you are in a region with statutory data rights (such as the EEA, the UK, or California), write to us at the address below and we will answer.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above.
